Sonatrach and Petrofac sign contract for a gas compression center

British oil and gas engineering company Petrofac is building a gas compression center to double production of Algerian Sahara deposits, exploited by national oil giant Sonatrach. Managers of Sonatrach and Petrofac recently signed in Algiers this contract worth $600 million, on the development of gas fields Tinhert, in the region of Illizi, 1 300 km in the Southeast of Algiers.

Petrofac announced at the end of August to have won this contract, consisting of the construction of a gas separation and compression center and the connection of 36 wells via a network of 400 km of gas pipeline.

The objective is to increase the production of the Tinherte field of 4.7 million m3 of raw gas per day. Last March, the government daily, El Moudjahid, estimated the current production of the Tinhert site at 5 million m3 per day, or 25% of its theoretical capacity.

The Algerian group has already reinforced several gas sites with similar facilities to cope with the pressure drop in these deposits.

Algeria is one of Europe's largest gas suppliers, along with Russia and Norway. The country produced about 94 billion cubic meters of gas in 2017, according to Sonatrach CEO Abdelmoumen Ould Kaddour.
