League of Arab States to complete pan Arab green hydrogen study by 2021

The League of Arab States, an intergovernmental organization for Arab countries, is in the process of preparing a study and a roadmap for evaluating the potential of green hydrogen in the energy supply by 2050 in collaboration with the German government.

Jamila Matar, director energy, League of Arab States said the study was mandated by the Arab Ministerial Council for Electricity, one of the specialized councils operating under the umbrella of the Arab league, in its last meeting.

“The study will be on top of the agenda for the upcoming meeting of the council and we are expecting it to be finalized by the end of this year”, she has said.

She said the Memorandum of Understanding on electrical interconnection between the Arab countries has gained traction and has achieved several key milestones including, “The development of governance documents for establishing the market, development of an electricity planning model to identify key trade corridors and quantify the benefits from trade, and more recently developing the pricing mechanism for trade”.

The goal is to achieve a fully integrated Arab regional market with an interconnected and synchronized electricity network by 2038, she said.

The official said the League is pursuing the agenda of energy transition based on four pillars -Switching to renewable energy sources and following energy efficiency practices, focusing on electrical interconnection between the Arab countries, using clean energy sources for e-mobility, heating and cooling and water desalination, and green hydrogen.

The League has established relationships and intensive co-operation with China, Japan, India, the European Union, the African Union, the German Government, the World Bank, IRENA and RECREE together with many Arab institutions yielding many positive results, she said.
