Vodafone Spain has reached its goal of being powered by 100% renewable electricity, following a deal signed with Iberdrola, a Spanish multinational electric utility company, for the long-term electricity supply of 13,500 Vodafone supply points.

Vodafone expects to halve its environmental impact by 2025 and reach net zero carbon emissions by 2040.

The operator's European network will be powered by 100% renewable electricity, creating a Green Gigabit Net for customers across the networks.

Using photovoltaic panels that turn sunlight directly into electricity, Vodafone's Madrid-based HQ, Vodafone Plaza, generate up to 558 MWh of electricity a year that equals average annual consumption of 170 homes in the country.

Also, a ‘Smartflower’ solar panel installed at the HQ uses the mechanism of a sunflower to automatically open and close at sunrise and sunset, obtaining huge amount of clean energy. Smartflower is up to 30% more efficient than normal solar panels.

Across Spain, Vodafone has also replaced its entire fleet - over 612 vehicles -with low-emission alternatives and has gone on to equip its premises with recharging points.

Vodafone wants to completely banish Scope 3 emissions by 2040, bringing forward by ten years Vodafone's original 2050 ambition to reach 'net zero' across its full carbon footprint.
