Chinese telecommunications vendor and technology leader Huawei has partnered with Kenya Electricity Transmission Co. Ltd. in an effort to provide a comprehensive analysis of the key factors of power communications network construction.

These key factors include power transmission and transformation service bearing, backbone communications capability building, network infrastructure resource monetization, and a continuous profit-making business model. Huawei also officially released the industry-leading, next-generation Universal Transport Solution for smart grids.

The rapid expansion of the global power grid is driving a spike in the construction of power transmission and transformation networks - that have greater requirements for more types of service and higher bandwidth.

Traditional low-speed services such as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and relay protection will continue to exist for a long time, providing high levels of security. Against this backdrop, it is essential to ensure the ongoing high reliability of the power transmission and transformation network. In addition, an increasing number of electric power companies are leveraging rich network resources to explore new services. Apart from the original production and operation services, it provides a broad array of value-added services which are flooding into communications networks.

To help electric power companies develop simple, future-oriented networks with continuous value growth, Huawei Next-Generation Universal Transport Solution integrates OTN, SDH, packet, PCM, and other technologies based on the MS-OTN architecture.

A single wavelength can reach 100 Gbit/s or 200 Gbit/s, and a pair of optical fibers can achieve an ultra-large bandwidth of 20 TB. This enables power transmission bearer networks to allow unified access of multiple services from backbone networks and access devices, simplifying networks and unifying devices. This solution meets the bandwidth requirements of smart grid information and digitization, and revitalizes network infrastructure resources for continuous business value growth.

Huawei invited Hon. James Gordon Kwanya Rege, CBS, Chairman of Kenya Electricity Transmission Co. Ltd., to share the technical trends and requirements for power transmission and transformation communications, as well as bandwidth operation, at its press conference held in conjunction with the CIGRE exhibition in Paris.

Hon. James Gordon Kwanya Rege, CBS, said: “Kenya’s power transmission network is expanding rapidly. With the fast development of digitalization and need for business monetization, there is an exponential growth in demand for backbone bearing network bandwidth. Hence, electric power companies need a bandwidth solution that caters to long-term growth evolution and flexibility in capacity expansion.”

"The OSN 1800 V, a next-generation smart grid universal transport flagship solution, not only supports immense bandwidth and MS-OTN features, but also innovatively integrates multiple functions such as the WDM, MPLS-TP, SDH, and PCM. This is a one-stop solution for complex power transmission and transformation. Now with the release of new equipment, I am even more confident about Huawei's innovative capabilities in the optical transmission field and our future cooperation."

Joe Zhou, Vice President of Huawei Transport Network Product Line, said: "The electric power industry has special requirements. For example, there are high transmission interface and performance requirements – including delay and jitter – associated with the transmission of relay protection signals on the power transmission and transformation network. After years of application, PCM devices with low-speed interfaces and SDH-based physical hard pipe technology have proven to be the most suitable technologies and cannot be replaced by other technologies. It is evident that the MS-OTN is the best solution for bandwidth acceleration and network value addition." He added that listening to customers, gaining in-depth customer understanding, and meeting customer requirements are the keys to providing leading power industry solutions.

Zhou further expressed: "The application of Huawei Next-Generation Universal Transport Solution for Smart Grid will further unleash optical fiber capabilities and provide reliable assurance for smart grid construction and development, as well as continuous operation for value growth. Looking ahead, Huawei will continue to provide customers with leading optical transmission network solutions, innovate technologies based on customer requirements, and work with industry partners to promote network cloudification and digital transformation."

Huawei provides the electric power industry with one-stop ICT solutions to bring digital technologies into every home and electric power enterprise, and is committed to being the best digital transformation partner for the electric power industry. To date, Huawei's fully-connected grid solution has been implemented by 13 of the world's top 20 power companies, and has been widely used in 73 countries worldwide, serving more than 190 electric power customers, including State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), E.ON in Germany, and ENEL in Italy.
