Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) organised a series of workshops in collaboration with Smart Dubai, to raise awareness on Principles and Ethics in Artificial Intelligence (AI). These workshops focused on Inclusiveness, Humanity, Security, and Ethics; including AI guidelines such as Fairness, Transparency and Accountability for project managers, experts and concerned organisations using and developing AI services in Dubai.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, highlighted that DEWA is one of the first government organisations in Dubai to adopt AI principles and ethics in its internal practices, for the common good and happiness of its stakeholders. DEWA has adopted the AI Policy and Quality Procedure to standardise internal processes relating to procuring, developing, and using AI systems. This is in accordance with Smart Dubai’s AI Principles and Ethics to enhance government services and promote adoption of AI-based solutions. DEWA uses the latest Self-Assessment Tools to ensure it is using the most critical AI applications ethically with corrective measures as needed.

“DEWA is committed to achieving the Dubai 10X initiative, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai; the UAE Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031 to improve government performance, accelerate the pace of achievements, and to create innovative and productive work environments that ensure high levels of productivity.

DEWA collaborates with Smart Dubai to apply the AI Ethics and Principles in all its projects and initiatives. DEWA started its AI journey in 2017 with a road map for AI techniques. It then initiated services and initiatives that use AI to enhance and add value to the customer, employee, and stakeholder experience. These include Digital DEWA, the digital arm of DEWA, to redefine the concept of utilities and create a new digital future for Dubai, to become the premier digital organisation in the world; with autonomous systems for renewable energy and storage and the expansion of AI and digital services.

DEWA provides all its services through smart channels and Rammas, its virtual employee, to respond to customers’ enquiries in English and Arabic. Rammas which uses AI, is available on our website,  smart app, Facebook, Amazon’s Alexa, Google Assistant and WhatsApp Business. Rammas has responded to 3.5 million enquiries and requests since its inception in Q1 of 2017,” said Al Tayer.

DEWA strives to keep pace with the latest technologies in AI and Fourth Industrial Revolution applications. This is by providing innovative solutions to face current and future challenges as well as enhancing energy efficiency. DEWA was one of the first government organisations to complete its digital transformation in 2014, one year before the Smart Dubai initiative was launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The initiative aims to make Dubai the smartest and happiest city in the world. DEWA scored 98% in April and May 2020 for smart adoption of its services.
